Alliance Saber Fencer Joseph Wysocki Competes for U.S. in Poland

In September 16-19, 2005 Joseph Wysocki, age 18, of Houston’s Alliance Fencing Academy, traveled to Sosnowiec, Poland as a member of a 24 person team that represented the U.S.A. at the first Junior World Cup of the fencing season. The ten man and fourteen women team fenced well, with Rebecca Ward capturing the gold medal in Women’s Saber for the U.S.A.

Wysocki competed in Men’s Saber which had 151 competitors. The field of 151 was reduced to 97 after pools. In pools Wysocki fenced Nikolay Kovalev of Russia the eventual gold medal winner, loosing 5-3, but his pool results were good enough to gain him a bye in the initial direct elimination round. Wysocki finished 47th overall after being eliminated 15-11 by Cosmin Hanceanu of Romania, the eventual bronze medalist.

Wysocki will represent the U.S. again in November at world cups in Frascati, Italy and Dormagen, Germany. Additionally, the U.S. fencers may remain in Germany to train for one week with the German National Team. Future world cup competitions on Wysocki’s schedule for the remainder of the season include tournaments in Budapest, Hungary; Logrono, Spain; and Dourdan France.

Wysocki trains at both the Alliance Fencing Academy locations in The Woodlands and Houston with his current coach Alex Ivanov.
