Congratulations to our medalists!!!
Bazarbayeva, Dina - 6th place, Cadet Women's Epee - 7th place, Y-14 Women's Epee
Bethlehem Witte - 8th place, Cadet Women's Epee
We had 11 fencers compete at the Albuquerque NAC. All are still Cadet except only two fencers who competed in Junior category.
GIRLS
JUNIOR (116 competitors):
Stephanie Wheeler (16 years old) was seeded 12 after her pool bouts with 5 victories and only one loss. Then she suddenly lost her DE bout for the top 32. Dina Bazarbayeva (13) did not do quite well in the pools having only 3 victories out of her 6 bouts but then she did a very good job fencing high ranked fencer Christa French for the top 64. Dina lost her bout to Christa only by one point when the score was 14-14.
CADET (72 competitors):
Dina Bazarbayeva placed 6th in the top 8 in the Women’s Cadet event along with her team mate Bethlehem Witte (16) who lost for the top 4 to the best US fencer Courtney Hurley the winner of the tournament. Her bout went from 13-13 to a final score of 15-13. Stephanie Wheeler got 18th place by loosing her bout for the top 16 when she was leading 13-11. We would also like to congratulate Neely Branfeld-Harvey (15) on her performance at this event. Neely got 5th place.
YOUTH-14 (43 competitors)
Dina Bazarbayeva won all her pool bouts and took 7th place in the final top 8.
BOYS
JUNIOR (211 competitors):
All our boys fenced very well at this event. Shawn Wright (18) finished in the top 16. Dillon Smith (16) got 25th place by loosing his bout for the top 24 to his team mate Shawn Wright. Daniel Trapani (16) lost top 32 to the winner of the tournament and the number one ranked junior in the nation, Benjamin Ungar, of New York. He lost by only 3 touches in a 15-12 bout. Nathan Sorenson (15) lost in the top 32 to a strong fencer from Canada. Jonathan Bibb (18) did not make the top 64. Unlikely, he lost to his team mate Daniel Trapani.
CADET (167 competitors):
Dillon Smith made the top 16. Daniel Trapani, Nathan Sorenson and Magnus Ferguson (13) made the top 24. They got 19th, 22nd, and 23rd places respectively. In spite of their best efforts, Daniel Trapani led 8-3 in his bout for the top 12 and lost. Nathan Sorenson led 6-1 in his bout for the top 16 and lost. Dillon Smith was ahead in the final bout and lost. The use of better concentration in the future will put them in the top 8.
YOUTH-14 (82 competitors)
Magnus Ferguson came in 3rd out of the pools and lost his bout for the top 16. He came in 17th. We are sure he’ll do better with more experience.
Zion Witte (14) won 4 bouts in the pools and then lost his concentration in his DE bout for the top 32. He got 33rd place.
