2006 Alliance Cup(Houston Cup #6) June 17, 2006
Two weeks before Summer National Fencing Championships, Alliance Fencing Academy hosted the final tournament of the Houston Cup Circuit, the Alliance Cup. The tournament consisted of Mixed Foil, Mixed Saber, Women’s Epee, and Men’s Epee (A2). About 40 fencers participated from several Texas divisions and from out of state!
In open men’s epee, the elite event of the tournament, there was a near record of 10 A rated fencers. This was one of the strongest events of any tournament in the history of the Gulf Coast Division. The twenty six experienced (high rating) participants had a battle royal to the final eight which included a mix of veteran and younger fencers ranging from Robert Reed (6th) to Nathan Sorensen (3rd).
The Houston Alliance Cup tournaments have been created to give our Gulf Coast area fencers an opportunity to practice competitively with other fencers from both inside and outside the division.
In men’s epee, the final four were Nathan Sorensen, Michael LoParco, Dillon Smith, and Matthew Neu. Nathan Sorensen fenced Michael LoParco for third place, winning 15:12. The final bout ended in sudden death with Dillon and Matthew at the supplemental minute. Matthew was one of our visiting fencers from Florida who attended the Alliance Fencing Summer Camp. Dillon won 15:14, his final and winning touch from a spectacular fleche attack. Congratulations to all the fencers who competed.
