The qualifiers for the Junior Olympics in February, 2007, for our Gulf Coast Texas Division took place this year at the Jerabeck Center, University of St. Thomas. Nine fencers from our club participated in five events: Cadet Men’s epee, Junior Men’s Epee, Junior Women’s Epee, Junior Men’s Foil and Junior Women’s Foil. Seven of our fencers qualified, one competed in an event for which he was already pre-qualified; one jumped in her rating from U to D-06, and one improved his rating from E-06 to D-06.

Congratulations to all and thanks to our coaches, Andrey Geva and Sabina Bazarbayeva for these results!

Cadet Men’s Epee

11 competitors, NR event

Ben Freiman and Michael Conrad were the only fencers representing our club. Ben, as the current #6 in Y-14 USFA Point Standings, was already pre-qualified to fence in the cadet JO so this was for him just a practice run and he finished 3rd. This gave a chance to Joel Breedlove of Katy Blades, in 4th place to qualify for JO. Congratulations!

Michael was at his first qualifier and placed 9th. He’ll gain more experience and will do much better next time.

Junior Men’s Epee

18 competitors, A1 event

This was a strong qualifying event with 2 A (from our club), 3 B, 4 C, 2 E, and 7 U. Our fencers were John Bone, Ben Freiman, Zoltan Krudy, and Nathan Sorensen. Nathan and Zoltan are qualified tying for 3rd place. John (7th place) and Ben (10 place) did not qualified, but John earned his new D-06 rating: bravo! Ben who is still a Y-14 will do better next time but will compete in the men’s cadets at JO.

Junior Women’s Epee

12 competitors, E1 event

Nicola Horscroft, Erin Pytel, and Stephanie Wheeler fenced in this event. Stephanie and Erin qualified by taking 1st and 2d places respectively; Nicola just missed her spot by placing 4th.

Junior Men’s Foil

18 competitors, D1 event

Robert Wooley was the only representative of our club in this event and he placed third and qualified. This is a great result for our young foil program and the work of our foil coach Sabina. Congratulations to both!

Junior Women’s Foil

18 competitors, D1 event

Kara Collins (1st place) and Nicola Horscroft (5th)both qualified. Kara won this event and her rating jumped from U to D-06. Nicola this time qualified in the weapon where she has more experience. Congratulations to both and to coach Sabina for her valuable assistance and teaching! Our girls are still “young” in fencing terms but performed beautifully against other local fencers with many more years of fencing experience.

Comments:

Our club started as an epee club with very few foil fencers. It is a tribute to Sabina, her work, and our dedicated foil fencers that succeeded as they did in qualifying for what is the top event of the cadet and junior fencing season, the Junior Olympics.
These fencers will join our other athletes which are automatically qualified because of their USFA Point Standings: Francesca Bassa, Dina Bazarbayeva, Neely Brandfield-Harvey, Max Ferguson, Ben Freiman, Dillon Smith, Nathan Sorensen, Daniel Trapani, and Bethlehem Witte.

Keep the focus on the JO Denver experience in February!
