North American Cup - A

Memphis, TN

October 6-9, 2006

Congratulation to our medallists!!!

Brandfield-Harvey, Neely - Gold Medal, Cadet Women's Epee

Bassa, Francesca - Silver medal, Cadet Women's Epee

Cadets Women’s Epee

(83 fencers, A2/B3 event)

Alliance was represented by Francesca Alexandra Bassa (15), Dina Bazarbayeva (15), and Neely Brandfield-Harvey (16). After the round of pools, Neely was #1, Dina #9, and Francesca #12 out of 83 fencers. All our three girls had a bye and won their first DE comfortably: Neely 15-4, Dina 15-7, and Francesca 15-5.

Then the repechage from 32 started. Neely with three victories (12-11; 12-4; 15-11) got straight into top 8 as did Francesca with her three victories (15-11; 9-4; 15-12).

Francesca’s bout for top 8 was with Melissa Goram, a French fencer from Guadalupe from the same fencing academy as Laura Flessel, the 1996 Olympic Gold medallist. Both are tall, lean, and left-handed fencers. In a very exciting bout, Francesca came out victorious 15:12 with superior strategy (credit to Andrey) and wonderful cheers and support from her friends and teammates against a loud and boisterous French gallery.

Dina won her first bout 15-7 but lost her next one 14-15. She then went though repechage with two victories 15-13 and 15-3, but lost the last bout 13-15 to make it to top 8.

The quarter finals Neely won 15-10 and Francesca 15-12. Neely ran into some trouble in her semifinal bout against Simone Barrette. Being behind by a solid score of 5 points (4:9) after the first period, with Andrey’s immaculate coaching and Neely's remarkable determination she managed to tie the score at 14:14. The next point was Neely’s as she made nice long attack with double lunge.

Francesca won 15-12 and this brought our two girls to the final.

After the second period of the gold medal bout Neely was leading 10:7. Then in the third period we had a bit of a drama when Francesca was accidentally hit by Neely’s mask during a fleche attack and sustained a bit of a concussion and a bruised nose. A ten minute break was called when ice was applied by the medics to Francesca’s forehead. Then the bout resumed with Neely winning the gold 15-8.

Great job girls!

Cadets Men’s Epee

(110 fencers, A4 event)

Alliance fencers in this event: Max Ferguson (14), Ben Freiman (14), Pietro Sanfilippo (16), and Nathan Sorensen (16). After pools Pietro was #4(T), Max #14, Nathan #20, and Ben #42 in a field of 110 fencers. 70 fencers made the cut to fight down to top 32 by DE. Ben lost his first DE 13-15 but will do much better next time. Max, after a bye, lost his DE 12-15 but gained valuable experience since Max is still competing Y14 this season. Nathan and Pietro both won their first DE after the bye, 15-11, but Pietro had the bad luck to fence against an opponent who used the epee as a whip and injured Pietro’s wrist with his unorthodox fencing. Regardless, after the second round Pietro was still #4 and Nathan #16.

In the repechage from 32, Pietro won his first bout 14-13, slowed down by his injured wrist, but lost the next bout 12-13. Nathan lost his first bout by a wide margin because of a malfunctioning weapon (aaaargh!) and the next bout 14-15. The next and last bout for Pietro finished again with his loss 14-15, clearly still affected by the injury sustained earlier on.

Cadet Women’s Foil

(95 fencers, A4 event)

We had two fencers representing our club in this event: Kara Collins (15) and Nicola Horscroft (16). This was a very tough (A4) event for our fencers who fought valiantly but did not make the cut after pools. They will improve as they gain national tournaments experience. Both girls have heart and attitude and have shown that they are good competitors. Better luck next time girls! Final placement: Nicola Horscroft - 78th place, and Kara Collins - 81st place.

Division II Men’s Epee

(114 fencers, B3 event)

John Bone (17) and Max Ferguson represented our club in this event. John did very good in pools. He had 4 victories out of 5 pool bouts. After pools John was #22 (T) and Max #50 (T). John won his first DE 15-8 but lost the next one 15-6. Max won his first DE 15-5 and the next one 15-13, but lost the following one 12-15. Final results for our guys: Max Ferguson 28th, and John Bone - 39th places.

Good practice for both our fencers!

Division II Women’s Foil

Kara Collins was our only fencer in this event. After pools with 2 victories and 4 losses (one just by one point) she was 64th and made the cut. She lost her first DE 8-15. Final placement - 70th .

Division III Men’s Epee

(107 fencers, C3 event)

Only John Bone participated in this event. With 2 victories and 3 defeats in pools he made the cut. He lost his first DE 11-15. John is working hard and will improve. His final placement - 75th.

Division III Women’s Foil

(78 fencers, C3 event)

Here again our two courageous foilist, Kara Collins and Nicola Horscroft represented our club. After pools, Nicola was #41 and Kara #60. Nicola had a bye, but lost her DE 11-15. Kara won her first DE 15-6 and her next one 15-12. She then lost 15-8. Final placements: Kara - 32nd, and Nicola - 48th.

Good show girls!

Traveling notes

Memphis is a nice town on the great Mississippi river. Those that drove from Houston had the chance of seeing a beautiful part of our country with gorgeous weather. Alliance fencers and family members enjoyed the celebration team dinners, including a surprise birthday party for John Bone. Everybody had a great time at this first NAC of the season. Let’s hope that we will repeat and improve on these results on our way to Summer Nationals.

Thank you Andrey, for your help to all your fencers when they are under the pressure of competition, for all the hard work and the great advice to relax and do the simple things that seem always to work best!

Go Alliance! Thank you Andrey, Sabina and Alisher!
