Congratulation to our medallist!!!

Simpson, Susanne - 8 place, Veteran Women's Epee

Only seven fencers represented Alliance Fencing Academy at the third NAC of this season, the first one for Division I (elite fencers) and veteran competitors. Our fencers participated in three different events and this time Suzanne Simpson was the only one to bring home an eighth place medal. Congratulations Suzanne! Three of our elite women fencers, still cadet, earned precious senior points which help them also in junior and cadet points. Andrey Geva spent two full days watching everything, running between strips, helping everyone with sound advice, and … visiting with his Russian friends

Veteran Combined Women’s Epee

45 fencers, B2 event

Two ladies from our club participated in this event: Suzanne Simpson and Suzette Wheeler. In pools Suzanne had a 4-2 win record; Suzette 2-3. After pools they were seeded #15 and #26 respectively. In DE, Suzette lost her bout 7-10 but Suzanne who had a bye, won her next two bouts 10-5 and 10-3 which got her in the finals. In the quarter finals, Suzanne lost 7-10 against Sally Still Gonsalves of the Gold Coast, FL Division, the winner of this competition.

Veteran Combined Men’s Epee

Veteran Combined Men’s Foil

Alexander Popovici was the only veteran fencer from our club at these events.

In epee competition  (61 fencers, A2 event) after a 3-3 wins in pools Alex was seeded 35th in the field of 61. He won his first DE 10-4 but lost 6-10 the next one against Walter Dragonetti of the Northern Ohio division, the winner of this competition. That was a good performance by Alex who placed 27th in this event.

In foil competition (44 fencers, A2 event) Alex started very well winning 5 out of his 6 pool bouts. He had a bye in the first DE round, and then unexpectedly he lost to lower seeded fencer 7:10 for the top 16. Alex finished 17th at this competition.

Division I Women’s Epee

106 fencers, A4 event

Division I is the elite level competition for senior fencers who must be rated C or better to participate. This event had 47 A, 34 B, and 25 C rated fencers. Four of our girls represented Alliance: Francesca Alexandra Bassa, Dina Bazarbayeva, Neely Brandfield-Harvey, and Stephanie Wheeler. Francesca, Dina, and Neely are still cadet fencers; Stephanie is at her first year as junior. All four girls made the cut after pools. After the round of pools Neely and Francesca had a bye, Dina won her bout 15:14 after a great come back when she was down 7:12 in the last period of this exiting bout. Stephanie won her first DE 15-10. In the next round of DE, Stephanie had the misfortune to run into one of the strongest and experienced fencers in the tournament, the Ukrainian Anna Garina who eliminated her. Dina eliminated Christa French 15-11 (coming back again when she was loosing 4:9). Christa at that point was seeded second after pools! Our three remaining girls entered the repêchage from 32. Francesca, Dina, and Neely won their first bout 15-14, 15-14, and 14-12 respectively. The next match was between Francesca and Neely. This was a bout of many double touches but in the end Francesca scored the last two touches winning 15-14. Dina lost her bout 12-15. Dina and Neely both lost their next repêchage bout 11-15 and 7-15 respectively. Francesca then lost her direct bout to make it into the finals against the strong Ukrainian Novakovska. Francesca had one more chance to make it to the finals by fencing against Kelly Hurley (2006 Cadet World Champion). This was a very interesting bout which unfortunately was penalized by a non combativity call by the referee which shortened the duration of the bout. This call is seen as very subjective on the part of the referee, but it was also the novelty at this tournament. In conclusion Francesca lost to Kelly 7-9 and Kelly ended this tournament with a silver medal.

Final placements: Francesca - 11, Neely - 18, Dina 24, and Stephanie - 63.

It is important to point out that our three girls in top 32 earned precious senior points which are also added to their junior and cadet points for the season. These points will be used to determine who will be part of the cadet and junior teams at the Cadet and Junior World Championship in April, 2007.
After this event, in junior team point Neely is #5, Dina #7, and Francesca #8. In cadet team points Neely is #2, Francesca #4, and Dina #5. Top four junior and top three cadets will be eligible for a spot on the respective world championship teams.

Great job girls and keep it up for the next NAC in Columbus!

Coach's note:

From the fencing prospective, there are two important reasons to attend Division I tournaments. One is the opportunity to see, meet and experience fencing and fencers at the top nationally and some great international athletes. We all enjoyed watching a very good Italian epeeist, Luigi Mazzone, past member of the Italian team and currently a neurophysiologist with a research grant at Columbia University. Luigi’s style is different and quite effective and he tied for third in Div I men’s epee. We also enjoyed the semifinals men’s saber with Ivan Lee and Keith Smart flunging on the elevated strip. Great athleticism and nice fencing by both.

The other reason is the points which can be earned in Division I competitions. It is important to know that while the winner of a national cadet tournament will earn 400 cadet points and the winner of a junior national tournament will get 600 junior points (valid also in cadet), placing 32nd in Division I carries 275 senior points which are also added to the junior and cadet points, if the fencer is eligible age wise. A 16th place in Div I carries 500 senior points; an 8th place, 685 senior points. The winner of a Division I competition earns 1000 senior points.

Obviously the competition at Division I level is always much tougher, but as we all know in fencing everybody who has worked hard can have a chance and there are always upsets with new fencers getting the prize, in particular when using the repêchage format. All our young fencers have a chance to make it in top 32 and if not, earn unique and valuable experience in competing with the best. But, to get the prize, one must be there and try, especially our young and upcoming fencers. You are good, but you must also tempt Lady Luck!

Thank you Andrey and Sabina for your work and passion!
We look forward to do even better at our next NAC in Columbus!

Go Alliance!
