Baseball Bats and EpeesThe 16th annual "Black Ties and Baseball Caps" Houston ASTROS Wives Gala. August 28, 2006
Alliance fencers were invited to perform on-strip duels for the 6th annual “Black Ties and Baseball Caps” Houston Astros Wives Gala, on Monday, August 28. As one of sports top fundraisers the event was held on the field of Minute Maid Park and featured a live and silent auction with lavish trips, gifts, and sports memorabilia which raised $525,000 for the Houston Area Women’s Center.
Alliance athletes Francesca Alexandra Bassa, Dina Bazarbayeva, Magnus Ferguson, Dillon Smith, Nathan Sorensen, and Stephanie Wheeler delighted the crowd with several bouts on an elevated piste in the center of the field. The duels became “up-close and personal” as our fencers were featured on the gigantic Astros replay screen. Coach Andrey Geva provided the crowd with explanations and touch-by-touch commentary of every bout. After fencing, baseball bats and epees swords crossed paths when celebrity Astros players mugged for photos with Alliance fencers.
This was a great opportunity to show the public what fencing is like in a glamorous setting and for a good cause. We are honored to have been part of this event and to have contributed to its success.
