Welcome to
The Houston Cup!
Fencing tournaments & camps in Houston and Katy
What is the Houston Cup?
The Houston Cup is a circuit of fencing tournaments and fencing camps to
help local fencers of different age categories prepare for national
fencing events. This initiative gives you:
-
better tournaments performance (higher
tournament attendance by fencers from all clubs)
-
opportunity to train together and learn the art of
fencing from different coaches
-
opportunity to gather points which will be posted
on the Houston Cup page
-
valuable prizes at the end of the fencing season
This season Houston Cup tournaments will run in two
different formats:
I. USFA format.
This is the way fencing tournaments usually run in US.
These tournaments are USFA sanctioned tournaments. "Sanctioned" means that A-E
rankings will be awarded after each tournament to fencers according to the USFA
Event Classification Chart.
The following USFA rules and regulations will apply:
1. Fencer must be a current USFA member (membership form will be available at
the tournaments)
2. Fencer must sign the Waiver of Liability and Consent for Medical Treatment
(will be available at the tournaments)
3. Tournament organizers will form a tournament committee, will provide
referees, and will perform mask and weapons check.
When: See Events Schedule
Where: Alliance Fencing Academy and Katy Blades Fencing Academy
Why: To prepare our fencers to national and international competitions by
practicing at the same USFA tournaments format.
Fencers benefit by not having to travel overnight to experience a top level
fencing experience.
How:
1. Fencers will fence 5 touch bouts in pools of 5-7
fencers.
2. After pools bouts all fencers will fence in Direct Elimination round to 15
points. Top 16 will run with repechage with gold and bronze medal bouts.
3. Fencers will fence mixed events (boys and girls together) unless more then 8
female fencers will be present.
4. Results with updated Houston Cup point standings will be posted on this
website after each tournament.
Who can participate?
Every fencer who is a current member of the USFA
The fencer must accomplish at least a beginners fencing
course at his club and has a complete fencing uniform set (including under arm
protector, knickers, high socks, and 2 working weapons and body cords).
Fees: $20 fee will apply for the first event. $10
fee for the additional event.
II. NCAA format
This is the similar way fencing tournaments usually run in
NCAA.
These tournaments are not USFA sanctioned tournaments.
It means that none of the A-E rankings will be awarded
after these tournaments.
When: Every Saturday (or/and some Sundays), which doesn’t conflict with
USFA national events such as North American Cups, Summer Nationals, and Junior
Olympics. See also the Events Schedule.
9:00am – 11:00am: Youth League (8-12)
11:00am – 2:00pm: Open League (13 and up):
1. Division I (A-C fencers)
2. Division II (D and under)
Top 3 fencers from the Youth League will be able to fence in the Open League
(Division II)
If less than 6 fencers show up in the Youth League they will fence in the Open
League (Division II)
Where: Alliance Fencing Academy and Katy Blades Fencing Academy
Why: To prepare our fencers to NCAA competitions, national, and
international competitions by reaching the maximum number of competitive bouts
per fencing day.
Fencers benefit by not having to travel overnight to experience a top level
fencing experience.
How: 1. Fencers will fence 5 touch bouts with every one in their League
in one big pool of maximum 16 fencers. If the number of fencers exceeds 16 there
will be two pools instead of one.
2. After pool/s bouts all fencers will be seeded according to the number of
victories in Final A (top 8), Final B (9-16), etc. In these finals fencers will
fence double elimination 15 touch bouts for all places. It means that each
fencer will fence at least 3 bouts to 15 points. In case Final B or C would have
only 3-7 fencers they will fence round robin 15 touch bouts.
3. Fencers will fence mixed events (boys and girls together) unless more then 8
female fencers will be present.
4. Fencers will referee them self.
5. There is no time limit for 5 touch bouts. There is 9 minute running time
limit for 15 touch bouts (Only one time keeper for all strips. Every body starts
at the same time. 3 periods of 3 minutes running time with 1 minute break in
between).
6. Results with updated Houston Cup point standings will be posted on this
website after each tournament.
Who can participate?
Every fencer who accomplished at least a beginners fencing course at his club and
has a complete fencing uniform set (including under arm protector, knickers,
high socks, and 2 working weapons and body cords).

club
