Super Regional Youth Championship

March 24-26, 2006, San Jose, CA

Seven (7) fencers competed in the Super Regional Youth Championship in San Jose, California on March 24-26 and came home with 4 medals and 6 results scoring national points!

Signe Ferguson competed in Y10 and Y12 women’s foil.  In Y10, she did great coming in 2nd in her pool.  She qualified to continue to the DE’s in 4th place, but her 3rd round DE was tough against the older Miranda Litzinger and Signe finally finished in 5th place overall.  Well done Signe!!!

Gabriel Acuna took part in the Y12 and Y14 men’s foil.  In Y12, there was a large field on 64 competitors and Gabriel did well finishing in 37th place.

Kara Collins competed in the women’s Cadet and Y14 foil events.  Out of 43 competitors in Y14, she placed 14th.

Sam Freiman competed in the Y12 and Y10 epee events.  In the Y10 event, Sam won his pool which put him in 2nd place heading into the DE’s.  In the final gold medal bout, Sam defeated top seed, Scott Spicer from California Fencing Club, to win the Gold!!!  Congratulations!!!

Max Ferguson competed in the Cadet and Y14 men’s epee.  In the Y14 event, Max fenced strongly and won his pool, putting him in a favorable position heading into the DE’s.  Max fought well to finish up 5th overall against a strong lineup.  Congratulations Max!!!

Ben Freiman also took part in the Y14 men’s epee event.  Ben had a tough pool and his result meant he had a hard run in the DE’s.  Ben finished up in 26th place.

Jack Hudson fenced in the Y12 and Y14 men’s epee events.  In the Y12 event, Jack won his pool and started in the DE’s in 3rd place.  The semifinal round was tough against Luke Hollenbeck, but Jack fought hard and beat him in two straight bouts.  In the final, Jack defeated Rene Gannon-O’Gara to win the gold metal!!!  In the Y14 event, Jack qualified in 16th position out of 46 going into the DE’s.  His 3rd DE was very tough against Michael Cirillo, who was a great deal taller than Jack!  Jack did well to finish in 13th place overall.

All of our Alliance fencers learned much from their experiences and were grateful to have the guidance of Coach Sabina Bazarbayeva, who was such a great support to them over the weekend.

With fencers like these, Alliance’s future looks brighter than ever!!!
